The FireHard system — including the WER rating, technical documents, and design guides — is a voluntary framework based on current best practices from wildfire research in Canada, the United States, and Australia. It is not a building code, regulation, or mandatory standard.
FireHard Canada is calling on experts, professionals, homeowners, and organizations to join us in developing and refining the WER rating system, construction design guides, and public outreach tools.
The FireHard system was developed by a small team of professionals in British Columbia. But wildfire resilience is bigger than one company or one discipline. We need expertise from across the building industry, insurance sector, government, and the communities this system is designed to protect.
FireHard v1.0 is published and free to use today. We're building FireHard Canada non-profit organization for stakeholder engagement, peer review, and ongoing refinement. The first step is bringing the right people together.
Whether you're a homeowner who's been through a wildfire, an engineer who knows building science, an insurer trying to price wildfire risk, or a building official looking for practical guidance — we want to hear from you.
Media & institutional stakeholders: Download the FireHard Media Package for a complete project summary, development history, and engagement plans.
Real-world feedback on the assessment guides and design recommendations. Your experience — especially if you've dealt with wildfire risk, insurance challenges, or retrofit decisions — is invaluable for refining the system.
Peer review of technical specifications, identification of gaps, and collaboration on system refinement. P.Eng. and licensed architect involvement is critical for credibility and eventual standards adoption.
Municipalities, regional districts, provincial building authorities. Integration with development permits, community wildfire protection plans, and building code references.
Integration of FireHard certification into underwriting, development of discount frameworks, and validation of the risk reduction basis. California's Safer from Wildfires shows the direction — we need Canadian insurers at the table.
Building product manufacturers, general contractors, and trades who can help validate specifications against real-world products, costs, and installation methods.
Community resilience organizations, wildfire preparedness groups, and non-profits working on housing, climate adaptation, or disaster response.
Fire behaviour researchers, building science academics, and anyone working on wildfire-structure interaction. The WER system should be grounded in the best available science.
Tell us who you are and how you'd like to participate. We'll be in touch as we build the FireHard Canada stakeholder community.
